The Smart Choice For Weight Loss – The Mediterranean Diet

A very popular diet today is the Mediterranean diet, which is based on the foods and eating habits of the Mediterranean people.

The Mediterranean diet is a smart choice, as you not only lose weight with health conscious foods, but according to studies in the United States and Britain you can also reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, while lowering your LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol.)

Another good thing that dieters will love is that there is almost no food restriction – the diet is based upon the types of foods you eat, and also the portions of those types of foods.

For Example, the Basic Elements of the Mediterranean diet are:

* Eating broiled fish which is high in Omega 3 fatty acids at least 2 times per week -such as salmon, trout, tuna packed in water, and herring, which help the heart and reduce inflammation.

* Eating poultry and fish instead of red meat, and limiting or avoiding fatty meats, such as bacon.

* Including several portions of fruits and vegetables each day, along with rice and pasta dishes.

* Eating small portions of nuts that are low in saturated fat – almonds, walnuts, hazel nuts, peacns and pistachios.

* Using low-fat milk and cheese, low-fat cottage cheese and low -fat or non-fat yogurt.

* Using olive oil or canola oil for cooking and in salad dressings.

* Eating bread without butter, (which is high in fat). Instead dip bread in olive oil or eat plain.

* A glass of red wine with dinner is encouraged (unless you suffer from migraines induced by red wine). Red wine contains flavonoids and anti-oxidants and has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease. If you don’t drink alcohol you don’t have to drink the red wine – if you prefer, drink a grape juice substitute instead.

Many dieters have had success with the Mediterranean diet’s combination of eating healthy foods and eating smaller, more frequent meals per day, which promotes steady weight loss, and better health.
